When it comes to highway mileage, even some earlier automatics were not so much worse than their manual counterparts as they were in city traffic.

Because you're not shearing the fluid between the stator and rotor, there is less energy loss.

Possibly due to inertia or compress-ability. Pure speculation, not an enkineer but I can play one on the internet

After overcoming inertia, it's easier to keep moving. But anyway, ain't ATF supposed to not be so easily compressible?
