NV3500 is looking better.

It has a cast iron case, aluminum bellhousing and tailhousing. One spec I saw online said 195lbs dry. All I know is that I can pick it up myself. (Can, not should, and not recommended.) The NV3500 is 110lbs wet. So we are talking a roughly 2% change in the overall vehicle weight.

One of the advantages of the NV4500 that I alluded to in my previous post is that first is so low (6.34 or 5.61) that you can put very tall rear end gears in it, and still be able to take off under load fine. The NV3500 has 4.02 or 3.49 first gear.

Oh, and my NV4500 waiting to take the place of the 4l60 in my 1991 k2500LD.

That's a pretty nasty 1st gear.
If I had an NV4500 I might swap an open diff 2.54 rear end my friend has on his pickup bed trailer.
All I have to do is give him my old axle or help him buy a trailer axle (if I want to keep my old axle).

Yeah the TH700R4 only weighs around 120lb. So 200lb for a cast iron NV4500 isn't as bad as I thought.

Your Sub could do more than 6k, it tends to come down to two things:

1] Tongue weight: Sub payload reduction despite a WD hitch spreading all but 60-75% off of the rear axle.

2] Trailer frontal area: wind resistance. This is why I'd avoid a big numerical drop. It's a more important consideration than weight, significantly so.

Post #20 is quite right. Test!

And, you'll have much more fun with a 4500. Knowing not just when, but how to shift is the, IMO, huge payoff of a nice manual . . getting the best blend of work and high FE in moving a load. Otherwise, why have a truck?
