Gen 1 Transaxle Teardown.

Hi all,

I finally got around to getting into the guts of the dead transaxle from my gen1 Prius. Instead of a photo dump I'll set up an Imgur gallery.

The failure mode was the sun gear. It was run without oil and I think the needle bearings came apart because there were bits of them in between the gears. I'll post more gear pics. Lost some when my hard drive died.

Interesting bit is the fully impregnated MG2. I'm probably going to cut up the case and rebuild at least MG2 into a generator. I recently acquired a metal lathe so the scope of my project possibilities is widening.

Any requests for more/detailed pics and info? let me know.

Looks like a LOT of salt encrustation/pitting on that casing.

Oh yeah. The wet coast will do that. It sat outside in the carport for 8 years. The innards were kept rust/corrosion free by the dino squeezings.
