Geo/Chevy metro maintenance?

Are Metros expensive to repair? How often do you need to do maintenance on it? I am curious cause I want to know if the mpg saves money in the long run compared to maintenance costs on something known for reliability like a early 2000s Toyota or Honda.

You can expect the usual "Japanese reliability" from them, and since they're simpler than a Toyota or Honda it also means there is fewer stuff prone to fail on the long run. If you buy one which had been taken proper care of, it's likely you won't get much to worry about.

Underbody rust is a major issue. The front control arm mounts rot away. They're good cars if you can find a good one. Reliable and easy to work on. Parts are cheap and still readily available. Nothing special about their maintenance requirements or cost.

A Toyota Echo/Yaris/xA/xB is probably a little more reliable. You can't really beat Toyota reliability. But a 3-cyl Metro with a manual trans will get better mileage. An automatic Metro isn't really worth considering, in my opinion.

It depends on the example, and that depends on the previous owner. There's a day or so left in this auction. There's your benchmark.

I found a mechanic's loaner that cost a thousand dollars. Below that you might shop very carefully. Here are the NADA book values for a 1998 2 Door Hatchback 4 Cyl.:
MSRP $9,455
Low $1,125
Medium $1,575
High $2,375
