So, in anything but a head on collision, weight works against safety. And since head on collisions make up only a small percentage of all accidents, then weight hurts more than it helps.
And if you still feel that weight is a good thing (despite the evidence), then why not make your vehicle heavier than anything else on the road?
I just found it a bit funny that's all, I don't know if you noticed but the Smart's windshield and the shape of the passenger cabin was looking intact, so I don't think it wouldn't necessaily been deadly for someone inside the car...just a little spectacular

...true, but the 'Racers' Corollary' says that anything that makes it possible to GO more quickly, likewise makes it possible to STOP more suddenly too...and, likewise, the slower to GO means the slower to STOP.
I think the speed is 70km/h for each vehicle (not 100% sure but i think that's what one of the german dudes says in the video)
Nobody would want to be in any car experiencing a crash...No car can ever guarantee your safety with absolute certainty. For its size and intended use (city car) I would think the Smart outperforms a big number of cars of its class and even larger vehicles. People that drive around in large-very large vehicles thinking their indestructible are the biggest danger to others and themselves. Self-awareness and knowing that it's best to avoid at all means a crash is what saves more people than any airbags and other contraptions...
