My car came with 195/60R15 tires. Were there any problems with the 195/65R15 tires in a bigger diameter? The authority at the Sears Auto Center refused to sell me 65 aspect ratio tires because they were not original equipment.

The wheel wells look plenty big for bigger tires. The tires on the supercharged Cobalts were quite wide, so Chevrolet changed the steering gear and the buyers had less travel and a larger turning radius.

Of course, my incentive for the bigger tire is to get a 3% higher gear and lower engine RPMs, rather like the XFE transmission upgrade of a higher fifth gear to get lower engine RPMs.

The tires I am considering are the Michelin Defender, the Continental PureContact with EcoPlus Technology, and the General Altimax HP. I put those Generals on my wife's Matrix: they have great dry traction. I would buy them even though they are not LRR. The fuel economy is still good.
really!!!???? what a dufuse.
I have had 245/50/18 installed over 245/45/18 by a VERY reputable tire shop. (largest seller of Michelin tires in Norther CA) Infact they are a top rated installer by TIRERACK. I explained what I wanted to try to achieve and they worked with me. Even to test fit a tire in the new size BEFORE i ordered the size in the brand I wanted.
Consider using the TIRERACK preferred installer in your area. My guy met the TIRERACK price (W/O including the frieght!)
Have since bought 5 sets of tires (freinds and family)

"It's going to change your handling", he said. I held up my fingers like a human micrometer about a third of an inch apart and said "yes, by this amount". He told me that it would not be safe to make the tires bigger, although you could make them smaller. I asked him to just hand me the quote.

That is hilarous!!!!

Did he have a low rider out back?????

Did he offer to sell an airlift kit with the 13" tires?????

(sorry, I feel your pain)

I just put on a pair of Bridgestone EP422's in the 185/65r15 size on my balt at the firestone dealer $80 out the door installed.

They will install any size you want if you sign a waiver, best way to handle this is to either
1. Mount your own tire
2. Take the wheels off and bring to an independant and have them mounted that way.

The sad part of this is the 2010 cobalts came STOCK with 195/65r15's to fix a speedo error, I would use that arguement with the ideots at sears (who also seem to be at wallland and fleet)

These 185/65''s actually are only 1.3% different in size than the cheap integrities that came on the car (strange)

Ah well.

You could win at Jeopardy with that encyclopedic information!

I am way tempted to buy the General Altimax HP tires that I put on my wife's Matrix. They have great dry pavement handling unlike the OEM Conti-something-AS that came on the car. The driving tests at tirerack.com state that they gripped better than the competition. I don't count snow and ice handling, because I install different tires for winter.
