This sounds like a great example of how things keep getting more complicated and expensive.

My car just has a regular key. Like Frank said - $1 a copy at the hardware store.

As for a fancy alarm system, I can think of several cheap and easy ways to foil a thief that cost next to nothing.

That said, any of my friends with VWs love them! Shame about the key cost though!

the ignition key on my truck doesn't fit in the doors. the offset is backwards. so i need to find a ford key that will go in the hole and then change the tumblers to fit the new key.

Try BMA car parts in California, or their online site. Calling gets better prices than online, and talk to Patrick. I get my BMW parts from them, and replaced an ignition lock for a lot less than that. With your car's VIN they can send you a lock already pre-set for your old key.
