Why are salad shrimp more expensive than large shrimp

The last couple of years frozen salad shrimp have been hard to find.

I had to ask the store and they had them in the “back room”

Price was between large and jumbo shrimp.

WTF?

I don't follow shrimp prices as I've probably only purchased it a handful of times. Cocktail shrimp has been on my hors d'oeuvres menu the last couple New Years Eve parties... you made me look on Safeway.

I'm seeing cocktail shrimp for $9.28/lb and everything else in the $8-$9/lb range.

What I find incredible is ham for $1/lb. There's no way anyone is making a profit at that price.

Nobody is making profit SELLING ham at a buck. a. Pound. concept: loss leader. You buy ham and while in the store you purchase associated fixings at elevated prices. 90% of world works that way.

In my experience salad shrimp have been cheaper than others and easy to find..... Until today when I decided to check prices at the local Costco and the salad shrimp are gone.

Other Shrimp Prices:
$5.99 / lb = Farm Raised Whole Head On 9/14 Count (Ecuador)
$6.99 / lb = Farm Raised Shell On 31/40 Count (Thailand)
$7.99 / lb = Farm Raised Shell On 21/25 Count (Thailand)
$8.99 / lb = Farm Raised Shell On 9/14 Count (India)
