Military-type MREs are not so common in my country, even though some usual items found on MRE packages can be purchased at a regular supermarket. Culturally, Brazilians tend to also favor something that at least looks more "natural".

Nothing in our rations can be purchased in supermarkets.

None of it occurs in nature!

None!

Winco used to sell MRE components, but stopped before my 40th birthday. I celebrated with pizza in the park, but I wanted to buy a bunch of magnesium powder heater packs, pour the contents into a simple envelope, hide it under briquettes, and then act surprised [from a safe distance] when it flares up.

Based on my experience it would flare way up.

Most of the items found in this MRE package can be found at a supermarket in my country, or at least a suitable replacement can be found.

I saw some instructions for making your own MREs, but they just shoved junk food into a Ziploc bag.

MREs are at least made from food, even if it isn't tasty food, or if it doesn't still resemble it.

Exhibit A: Wheat Snack Bread:

It isn't wheat, it isn't a snack, and it isn't bread, but as long as it is unwrapped, you can sit or step on it without damaging it, and it will last until peace breaks out.

You can't do that with wonder bread.

It seems weird to pack dry food when you need to pack water to compensate, but it lasts longer that way.

They have soups and stews, but I have never seen ready-to-eat pouches in a grocery store, just camping suppliers.

Just today, the Garfield cartoonist talked about the importance of magnesium to being able to think happy thoughts. Apparently it's important to take it with your Vitamin D.

There a Winco down the way, I avoid it because too much walking, but if they had preserved food what aisle would it be in?

I had a single slice ($5) of Triple Pepperoni sitting in front of a fireplace.

My pizza is cold...

My hand is hot!

Too much walking to the store or inside it?

Occasionally being more right than not is all that success entails.

Papa Murphy's has a triple pep occasionally, and the real magic is that cupped pepperoni that pools grease in it, which I'm pretty sure is the fountain of youth, but medicine hasn't discovered it yet.

For my sixteenth birthday or something I had pizza and realized that I had grease running all of the way down my arm.

I had a coworker who removed his pepperoni to dab the grease and I think he had a point.

The wincos I visit had MRE back in the bulk section, but they aren't stocked anymore, not enough sales to allocate the shelf space or it was a onetime buy and stock is consumed.
