I recomend "High preformance all season" or "ultra high preformance all season" tires for cars and minivans.
They stick to the road very well, you can stop fast and they respond to driver inputs very well. I wont go with anything less now.
I will take a 1mpg hit on my truck to get better preformance every where else, (only use load range C floation sizes on truck and trailer). I can pick up 1mpg pretty easy else where. I cant improve wet traction, stopping distance, cornering any other way as well as I can with a real good tire.
Some times you have to get creative with tire sizing to get what you want.
