If fuel consumption is your only consideration the first gen can't be beaten.
If you like having a rear bench and want good value for money and reliability the second gen is worth a look. They can be had fairly cheap now.

On a fair day with a delicate right foot up to 70 mpg is possible in the second gen.
The CVT has a very wide 'gear' range, allowing you to pootle along at 1100 RPM @ 35 mph or just under 2000 RPM at 60 mph.
Revs that low defeat the need to P&G for economy.

Yes you can get better economy in a manual first gen - but unless you really put effort in it, not by that much. See my log and the hybrid fleet list.

I won't claim being objective, after all I own one

Another good cheap option for around 3,000$ is a 92-95 Honda civic VX. Most people get around 50mpg in those.

dessoir2, I can't link it from here but on Mpls CL there is a '00 Insight with chameleon type paint which certainly isn't factory. Looks like the car was built for looks more than function?

I sent him that one already, it's in my post above.

BTW, first one in my post has already been sold, you gotta move fast for a good deal!

I figured he'd be able to talk that guy down because of that goofy paint job that unfortunately doesn't even match all the way around because he had to replace one of the wheel skirts

Sorry I didn't click those links.

Yeah I wonder how much that unique paint job cost? It's definitely got its own look.

I dunno, but normally when you see that kind of paint job where I live there are also some 25" spinners on the car, so it was really confusing to me.
