That was actually (the late) Don Schroeder and Don Sherman with an Insight, and a Ford Excursion with the doors open, and a reinforced mudflap as an air dam. The insight was driven inches from the bumper of the Ford for the loop, and they used two way radios and hand gestures to communicate for braking and maneuvering.

Not practical, not particularily safe. But ballsy, and they eeked 122mpg out of the Insight.
