How far from the windshield can the driver properly see?
I vaguely remember seeing some discussion about this, years ago. How far from the windshield can the driver properly see?

Depends on the driver. Depends on the windshield.
You might mean distance from the driver to the windshield. Arm's reach so you can wipe condensation off the inside.
You might mean distance from the windshield to the horizon. The angle of the glass is important. Too steep and refraction obscures the view. Too curved and it displaces objects.
Optimum is the curved-screen Superbeetle.
edit: I'm half serious. Compare with the Type III. The Beetle has an A-pillar that's narrower than the B-pillar. The upper corners are rounded. It's like a sliced-off teardrop. The flat screen is best for optical clarity.

I have a book on aircraft design that, I think, has a section on seating versus windscreen view. But I need more info before I go and dig it out.

Thanks for the replies, but nevermind- I've decided not to pursue this particular path.

FWIW I don't like the distance to the windshield in the old "Dustbuster" GM vans. I'd consider that, or somewhat less, as my limit.

To build something resembling the AST would require a fully cab-forward configuration. I would want to have a front crumple zone there, so I'd want to have the pilot's seat well back from the front bumper, therefore windshield, also. That's why I asked. I'm thinking I won't build a cab-forward car because it complicates engine location, also. And that came about because I just came across a different design that I want to mimick.
