If considering a scooter and the fun factor is important then i think they are good choice, for people without kids, or say people who have real parking issues, consumer wastefulness issues? the scooter is a great choice. I want one because they are fun local summer travel. Not because they are good on fuel which they may be, but not for their size/ability. My car gets 60mpg this linked scooter gets 100mpg so it has a large real world fuel saving potential.

There is plenty of good advise here to be safe on any vehicle. In Upstate NY I have a small car, bike rack, and a faired bicycle. For 5 miles I would ride the bike and look for the best route even if it adds another mile. If I get to the point where I can cruise the bike above 20 mph I will switch from a cycling helmet to a full face Bell helmet. I use the Bell in the winter anyway.

The new engines from Honda with closed loop O2 sensors and big catalyst are finally making an attempt to match the HC emmisions by fuel weight of cars which means they are getting very green due to the low fuel consumption.
