Correction - Win2k Pro and XP Pro both run better than Win98 (With or without SE or Plus) on the same CPU and RAM.

Anything before 98 except 3.x really isn't worth bothering with.

Hi,

If the original poster has enough RAM to run WinXP (or 2K) then great -- this is the best OS that Microsoft has made, so far. If it has 1GB, then it'll be a great machine, despite it's older CPU.

But, and this is a BIG but: if it has 512MB or less of RAM, in my opinion Win98SE would be a better choice if you need to stick with Windows. Ubuntu would be my strong preference, if all you want is to use it, and avoid the maintenance challenges of Windows.
