I got caught in severe (normal) Portland rush hour traffic today while on a slight downhill slope. Not moving fast enough to idle in 1st on my manually shifted Acura, I turned the engine off, kept the seat warmer on, and just let gravity pull me along whenever traffic crept forward. Before getting on this site, I would have been among the hundreds of others, idling their engines (or worse, accelerating and braking) and not getting anywhere fast.
I could have waited until 7:30pm for traffic to die down, but my wife was home, and the love of a woman makes for many inefficient decisions.

It's good to turn a car off in a car-wash anyway. Did you hear of that case where two guys died in a car wash from their poorly tuned truck being left on and poisoning them with carbon monoxide? Don't be like that.

Sometime in the late 70's, I was in a long line at the entrance to Yellowstone Park on a similar downhill on a warm day. Shut the engine off, I stood on the running board, hitchhiker standing on his running board, and we just jumped off and pushed as needed. A number of people in line found it entertaining. The truck was a 1955 Ford.

Ten years ago, I was driving to work, with a great deal of traffic getting on the freeway. I shifted to neutral, turned off my engine, coasted along, and bump-started when I could actually accelerate.
I did not do anything of the sort again for many years, though.

I re-read the driving tips about once a week and a few I thought I would never do. Now I use all that apply to my life and vehicles. More $$$ for fun stuff!

You know it's funny, recently, I have been becoming less and less eco-minded. Gas prices have nothing to do with it, it's just it doesn't seem to make that big of a difference when I'm already getting 60+mpg without even trying.
