jeep in a box
What are the iconic form factors for the automobile? The Model T Ford, the Volkswagen Type I, and the 1942 Ford Jeep.
Reproduction pieces and parts are availble for all three, but for instance, a complete VW Type II bus body would be $17K. These Jeep bodies are ~$4K and as shown in the video they are made of 'Galvanneal' steel. This would be a serious foundation for whatever build was desired: diesel offroader, electric urban car, tractor for a foamie?
Personally, I'd go for a full aerodynamic add-on kit, a Veep-style rear engine electric drivetrain, and a top with four butterfly doors like the Ford Evos concept from 2011:
At one time there were stainless steel bodies coming out of the Phillipines. Here's a story about one such converted to electric:

The Jeep culture in the Philippines used to be stronger, with so many "owner-type" models which had some hot-rod vibes.

Well Youtube un-alived the original video about Jeep in a Box. I only find out because I saw this new video:
We'll see how long this one lasts. For the record:

Anyways, their using hand formed stainless steel bodies. There used to be an importer is Southern Oregon; and there's still the $4K Jeep in a box that needs some Toyota drivetrain. (Maybe Prius?) I'd want mine with the front suspension from a 1951 Jeepster:

I like the Philippine OTJ (owner-type Jeep) culture, yet I'd much rather make something more off-road oriented. Even if I were to do it like Gurgel and resort to a Volkswagen powertrain.

Do it like Wil-Mac:
Gurgel had a space frame, the Scamp had a simple 2x4" rectangular tube frame connecting the VW front beam and rear torsion housing. Probably not much more than two straight rails.
The Jeep in a box would come with the military two-piece 16" wheels. They are 5 on 5.5" (140mm) bolt circle. Adapters would let you use them with VW/s 4x130 or 5x205.
Then you'd need a teardrop:

I guess you understood what I meant when I said I would do it like Gurgel, regarding the engine. A space frame would be totally out of question if I would attempt to build an OTJ.
