It used to be fairly common for aircraft engines to run inverted, in order to keep propeller blades clear from obstacles on unimproved runways. Then the boxers became mainstream, so inverted engines were no longer needed. And now, when regular car engines are adapted for aircraft, usually they're matched to reduction gears which also set the propeller hub higher, which helps providing such clearance.

Most likely it was a matter of modularity and cost-effectiveness due to a greater parts commonality between different versions of an engine, with different amounts of cylinders. Of course reliability is also benefitted by such measure.

As it has already been FAA certified, most likely it won't be too hard to find info. AFAIK it's not classified info.
