If you can find a copilot, that's always best. If not, come out anyway. If you can rig something in your car where you can hang the instructions in such a way that you can easily glance at them while driving, you should be able to do the route without getting lost. In that case, you can more or less ignore the timing.
You might even find a free body at the start to hop in as your copilot. See you Saturday!

Thanks euromodder. Today's event was terrific. It's late, I just got back to NY, and am ready for bed, but I can tell you all that an Ecomodder in an old Japanese car finished first overall.
More details, pics, and a full write up coming soon.
Mike

It was indeed a great day ! A big thank you to Jeff for organizing this event and to all the participants that joined. A very fruitful experience.
The ECHO managed to get 6th place @ 51.8 MPG. We were up against 2 Smarts and 2 Honda Civic Hybrid. Not too shabby for a first attempt. Major kudos to my last minute navigator Chan Tchen !
PS : That Datsun is a monster !!

Excellent job, Mike
Winning an eco-rally in an ancient gasser against a diesel Smart is no mean feat.
What happened to that Diesel Smart BTW, they're like 25% over their rated fuel economy ?
If the Smart gasser had driven the diesel Smart, he'd probably have beaten you though.

I noticed that my car struggled while going uphill, as if it didn't have torque even when downshifting. Definitely something I have to check and to consider since I believe it affected my overall mileage and my rear right wheel drags a little bit.
Already looking into changing my suspension (lowering + stiffening) in order to maintain momentum in the countless bends throughout the course. Perhaps even a 4-2-1 header...
I have to say that the 1999 Tercel's result surprised me. The guy removed his right-hand mirror which most certainly helped.

Quick update: seems the Civic will win the L/100km/ton class since the Elantra's weight was specified as gross, not curb.
I'm disappointed that I the Levin didn't do as well this year. Factors against: big fat tires and leaving the window open far too much/often. Factors for: the engine was off at least twice as much last year. Looking forward to trying again next year!
Thanks to everyone for coming out and making this a bigger success than 2010. There are definitely teams pumped for 2012 and I'm curious to see how low into the 3's we can go!!!

This is awesome. Love the 70s Datsun. That was its heyday. I wish we had one of these runs in Southern California. Would love to plan for one in a year or so...
