Knock, knock. Who's there? A Rotating Detonation Engine

This is still hypothetical enough that it's Corral material. At t=183 you see two intake valves with valve springs and cam lobes. And an exhaust port. With a supersonic exhaust it's prolly loud.

Later it appear to be structured like a one-sided Telsa Turbine.

I was pleased to see at t=444 that Scuderi made the list. But it's listed as an external combustion engine. Curious.

That was an interesting video, thanks.

I've been halfass pondering alternate ideas to how an engine could generate usable power...as in electricity. Right now, it's all about converting the power "made" in to rotating kinetic energy, which is then used to generate electricity...why not skip the rotating part and have the movement of the piston itself - as a moving magnet - convert the kinetic energy directly in to electricity?

Yeah, lots of technical issues to overcome, but you'd cut out a lot of friction and moving parts.

Ok, back to reality now. (Someone else can figure out how to do it).

The first patents of free-piston linear generators date from around 1940, however in the last decades, especially after the development of rare-earth magnets and power electronics, many different research groups have been working in this field.
