The left side of our new 2012 5th wheel trailer



Trailer is 29 ft long. It will be 33 ft long with the planned boat tail. Note the sloping roof which already reduces the wake area to 65 sq ft. A 4 ft boat tail can reduce this wake area to 37 sq ft.

This is the right side. Trailer has two slide outs on this side. One for a wardrobe, and one for a dinette and living room couch.

Can you add leading and trailing edge fairings to the awning arms? I pointed those out to an RV salesman about 20 years ago and how they weren't good for fuel economy, he scoffed and said, "Man, nobody driving one of these things gives a crap about fuel economy."

And yet here you are.

How do you plan to attach it? What kind of structure are you using and will it be removable? I'm sure all of us here with travel trailers are watching with great interest.

You need to look at the photo i posted of the rear end of the trailer to see the attachment points. Basically I am going to velcro the edges to the back trailer wall. Then attach the two corners together for support. The two bottoms will rest on the two foot platform already attached to the trailer. I can use the ladder for a crossbar attachment point. I can use the crossbar for a vertical bar attachment point. I am thinking one inch foam board fiberglass ed for rigidity and strength. First we need to baseline the trailer truck mpg combination.

I'm not sure Velcro will hold up in the long run over time. It's a good fastener fer mock ups and light duty but may fail at the least opportune time.

I am concerned about that too. I am thinking of using 1x2s for the velcro which will then be attached to the panels. I am hoping the bottoms resting on the shelf will give it strength in compression and the crossbars will give it strength in tension. The corner attachments should give it monolithic rigidity.
