The best bet is the cheaper higher energy LFP cells. 4 40ah CALB cells would provide ~12.8V nominal and could output 500A continuously w/ a weight of ~13lbs and ~500+Wh of usable capacity for ~$200. Supposedly cycle life is ~3000 cycles before they get down to ~350Wh of usable capacity, so that's about 8 years of life assuming no alternator use (longer w/ one). Compared to a new LA battery they look favorable and eve compared to j-yard batteries they're still cost effective for use w/o a alt.

Issue with this idea is:

347.11(1)
(1) The headlamp shall be an electric headlamp and the current shall be supplied by a wet battery and electric generator, by a current–generating coil incorporated into the magneto or by a generator driven directly by the motor by means of gears, friction wheel, chain or belt.

Just leave the belt on and control the alt via a switch. Course, that's an outdated regulation. Manufacturers sell vehicles w/ Gel/AGM batteries so there goes the wet section.
