I use one of these:

as my go-to for "dependable" readings. It's affordable, consistent, and fits in any glove box or pocket. I compared it to other fancier, more expensive, and theoretically higher accuracy gauges and got similar read-outs. It resets itself each time you use it, which helps convince me that it's trying to be accurate. I've probably had it 10 years, and I have yet to change the battery in it.

I also trust the analog gauge on my tire inflation air tool. It agrees with my little digital gauge. Of course, it has such a small face on it for such a large range that it's give or take 2psi.

I have a 12-volt (cigarette lighter) air compressor that will shut off at whatever pressure you set it to. The built in digital pressure gauge does not agree with the two above, always reading 3 or 4 psi higher than they do. But, knowing this, it's easy to set it a few psi higher and forget about it.

And I have one of those dirt-cheap stick ones kicking around. I tend to leave it in my wife's car, so I don't have to go find another. It's neither accurate, nor does it read high enough for my other needs - like bike tires at 60 psi - so it's just there to give an indication of whether or not that tire that looks a bit flat really is or not. They're cheap, and if I had a bunch of cars on the road at the same time (more than I already do), I'd probably spend a buck and put one in each for peace of mind.

Do with as you will with this information. I'm not trying to sell anything.

I ended up digging out my older digital gauge I've had for probably 10 years now. I popped it open and it needed a new battery. This is the thing I don't really like about it, it uses two of the CR2032 coin batteries. I'd rather throw a few AAAs in it or something... oh well. It does work nicely though.

Here is the one I have. Its an Accutire pressure gauge. It seems many electronic ones have this same name though...

Could you just wire it to use some AAA's? Just need a battery holder. 3d printing project!

I''ve got a couple cheapo digitals. There's supposed to be one in each glove box and one in the little bin atop the compressor, but I think one is missing. As long as the one on my compressor is still there, I'm good.

A few bucks several years ago? That's essentially free, so who cares? I've got bigger things to worry about.

They have a range of models:

ACCUTIRE GAUGE

As to the cr2032's...you can buy 'em at the dollar store and such, cheap. Sure, they'll only last half as long as an energizer, but they're 1/10th the cost...I bought a 10 pack from Princess Auto, seeing as I find myself changing a couple of them a year. (no, not in the same appliance)

I work at Lowe's so I ended up getting a digital Kobalt one that I now leave in my glove box all the time. I've been happy with it, I personally like the digital ones cause they are pretty accurate and easy to read. As you said though, eventually the batteries will run out.

I Prefer mechanical dial air gauges. No slap sticks for me

Use the one that agreed with the largest volume of other that is accurate enough. Consistency is key. I like this type

At the Dirt track it's a 0-30psig at the asphalt cart track 0-15psig for day to day 0-100psig with a stubby(no wip, fits in jocky box better ). On the track .5psig can be the difference between 1st and DNF.
Gumby Stay Flexible.
