On the R8, it is a little deceiving, the louvers are for the cooling air intake.
Déjà vu I was corrected the first time i posted that picture, was that you? I have a distinct memory of reading that decades ago. Maybe if I beat my head against a wall I can dislodge that.

As it turns out, I've been theorizing that I could use the engine cooling air as is being discussed, and place the air intakes at the top of the B-pillar to suck energy out of the vortexes that appear there. That would make the energy investment do triple duty.

Given that it was a bad example, do you have an opinion on the middle/periphery part?

Probably was me beard. I doubt if too many have owned an r8 or 10.
No idea on the reality of where is best. I would dump it into the lowest pressure zone. Let others who read nasa papers answer that.

And blow that sucker right off?

My thought experiment is to start with a complete boat-tail (my spell checker likes it hyphenated, sorry). Obviously, at full length, it ends in a round pipe. But as you truncate to make a place for legal niceties like license and tail lights, it seems the air exiting is adding to the bulk of the moving air whether it's relatively higher or lower pressure, so at the outer edge wouldn't it shed a non-turbulent curtain off the end — extending it virtually. Compared to just dumping it into the middle.

Morelli's work on the CNR car is the only piece I've seen which seriously delves into truly turbulence-free exits. And he didn't have to pay for his tunnel time at Pininfarina!

A hint from connclark had me doing a Google Image Search on 'coanda nozzle'. I scan the pictures to find articles of interest. Probably the best was this:
Advanced Aerodynamic Devices to Improve the Performance, Economics, Handling, and Safety of Heavy Vehicles

Active control of low drag vs air braking and yaw control for crosswinds.

On CarBEN EV5 I am going to use a slot vent right along the edge of the side -- the air flow coming off the side will help pull air out of the inside of the car. It also should help keep the laminar flow smooth.
