Hello everyone! I am just now joining the club, though I have been following various posts in this forum for over a year now. I own a 1996 Chevy Corsica "Half-White Corsica" 3.1L MPFI 4spd auto, 179,000 miles and she's still going strong. Though the body isn't in the best condition .

I recently purchased a ScangaugeII and have been slowly learning how to best use the various gauges to achieve the best MPG. I make a 170 mile trip across state every couple weeks, and have found that at 55-60 mph it can get about 36 mpg with cruise, compared to about 32 mpg with cruise at 75 mph. As the rated hwy mpg for this car is only 27, this is already an improvement . With my normal driving style I found that I generally get about 22 mpg making the trip across town to the airport about 3 days per week, though recently I have been able to bring this up to about 27 .

Currently, I am working on driving with reference to the MAP reading on the SG and practicing DWL based upon that. Some topics that I would be interesting in reading about from other users are the best uses of the ScangaugeII, best ways to drive an automatic for MPG, and the notorious "accelerate hard or accelerate soft" question.

Happy hypermiling everyone!

Hey there Abogart welcome to the site! I too am from Michigan and also own a 3100 v6 which is in my 95 Grand Am. I must correct a few things tho. You have a 3100 SFI V6 in your Corsica and 179k miles is just breaking that motor in . I am sitting at 311k right now and no signs of it quitting. Your car is about 200lbs less than my car so that will help a small amount. I too have a 4spd auto and they are actually very smooth and economical. I have found they get better mpg if you slowly get up to speed and stay around the 45-50mph mark. On the highway 63 is the sweet spot it seems. I can average 34-37 on straight highway at that speed. Cruise kills mpg for the fact it accelerates up hills and slows you down going down them so I don't use it. Check out my fuel logs and if you need any more pointers tell me .

Welcome to the forum. Just remember that in top gear the faster you go the more less fuel efficient your car will be.

Thanks for the welcome and useful tips everyone!

NateHale, I'm glad to have found another 3100'er out there already, I have been trying for years to find out how exactly this car likes to be driven, it's nice to get some input and tips from someone with a similar vehicle. And indeed I'll be checking out your trip logs, thanks!
