Is our little Pillbug in this diagram?

Threshold Strategy - Halving the Drag Coefficient Seems Possible
Threshold Strategy - Halving the Drag Coefficient Seems Possible - ATZ online

Quote:
The drag coefficient of cars is gradually falling to the level of cd = 0.25, but its progress is so hesitant that you could be forgiven for thinking that this figure represented a limit set by the laws of physics. It will be demonstrated how the apparent obstacle can be overcome. A further cut in fuel consumption can be achieved if the reduction in drag is accompanied by the corresponding use of lightweight structures and a specially designed powertrain.
Close, but not exactly.

Halving it again? (Not giving up an email address to read the fine article.)

I think you need to be a subscriber to their magazine in order to do the "free" download anyway.

The premise seems to be push down to the theoretical optimum. Too much shenanigans in the auto industry for that to happen.

If it doesn't discuss recreating 3D models of the Pillbug (from photos) and the Volkhart-Saggita (from the example in a museum), printing them on a 3D printer (carbon fiber/ABS, thanks much) and dropping them on a Inrekor flat-pack clone of the VW floorpan; then it's a fluff piece.

(For the record. Of course you were the first to mention it on Ecomodder.)

Edit: Google only finds this black and white, but I saw a color picture of the door interior of the Rome-Berlin racer, or possibly the modern-day clone. It had oatmeal square-weave carpeting and a door pull that looked like it belongs in a theater lobby.

yeah,it's Paul Jaray's 1922 Cd 0.13 'pumpkin seed' on far left,

followed by Wolfgang Klemperer's 1922 Cd 0.16 'minivan.'

Here is Klemperer's 'pumpkin seed,which lacks diffuser,Cd 0.15

Here's three-row seating on a Type I floorpan, the Porsche 700. With a center driver like the Pillbug and Macpherson struts in front it would be a credible replacement for the Type II. Then the Volkhart-Sagitta replaces the Type I and ATZ Online's dream comes true.

Seems like the 700 would have been a great vehicle for post war German reconstruction.
I've gone camping in my Transporter with a bunch of folks and all our gear, and we never had trouble, even when negotiating the mountains of New Mexico.
That 3-row Porsche would have been fine. And worth $40,000 today!

Like I said — 3D printing. But I would revise the tail and the door cut-lines. More like the Ford Evos:
