FWIW, Bill Lear (of Lear 8-track and LearJet fame) wanted to build steam-powered busses back in the 1970-80 years.

I think Lear tried to build an Indy Car. The engine I remember looked like a traingle with each leg a pair of opposed pistons working on three crankshafts at the corner where the points of the triangle were.

Interesting--it looks kind of like a Napier Deltic engine, at least in general layout and principle.
