In my Insight, shifting earlier always helps, and cruising in a higher gear always helps. Nothing destroys tank fuel economy than a few screaming WOT runs up to freeway speed shifting at "peak torque" (4800rpm), which is not that far off from redline. I find I do best if I never let it rev over 2000. Sometimes the shift light comes on as low as 1300-1400rpm.

I never WOT to shift points, that puts you in fuel enrichment. I stayed under 1/2. I drove under the speed limit, even on the interstate.
