Finally beat my 200% EPA trip goal

Around one year ago I created my signature and I've been slowly working on it. Today, I achieved this:

I've been collecting data and believe my MPGuino is currently reading about 4.9% high, but I plan to go through at least another tank or 2 before adjusting it. Even so, it works out to 48.6mpg, beating my previous best of 44mpg as reported via the MPGuino (actual 41.9).

The weather tonight is 63F (17c) and humid. The car was mostly warm from coming home from class an hour ago when I decided to drive across town to Starbucks for a latte. On the way there I averaged 35mpg (as reported) driving conservatively with no P&G, which is pretty average lately. I was inside long enough for my MPGuino to reset. On the trip home I used EOC via the ignition switch which resulted in short intervals where the MPGuino wasn't getting an VSS data, so my actual mileage was a little higher. Average speed was about 40mph.

I was shifting into 5th at around 1700rpm which falls at 25mph in 4th gear. The peak of my pulses was around 45mph which is 2400rpm in 5th gear.

Normally I'd throw out trips that are under 5 miles, but I'm so pleased I've decided to mark it down on my milestone marker anyway.

Nice going!

I envy your weather. 50 deg F is about as good as it gets here these days. Often it's in the 30's during the day.

Congrats! I always notice your "milestones" signature (it's a good idea). Good to see another "X" in there!

Good work.

I wish I could double EPA, in my cobalt that would be 74mpg, closest I ever came was on a short trip back from the gas station of 69mpg but never could achieve more than 52mpg on a tank. High 40's lifetime average is all I get After this wonderfull 42mpg cold weather high speed / in town tank it will go down a bit.

My saving grace will be the insight, except when I need to carry 2 other passengers

I rented a cobolt from enterprise once with an automatic tranny. It seems to do the fuel cut thing down to almost a dead stop. This made great for p&g without messin with shifting to nutral or turning the ignition off. I had fun flooring it at every stop light til I reached the speed limit, then lifting and coasting til the next light. Saw a 40+ mpg on the display. That was one of very few rental cars Ive driven that got more than 20 mpg.

I don't think automatics have fuel cutoff? I'll have to read into it.
