You'll want a more accurate baseline than just familiar routes or tank-to-tank.

If it's an OBD-II car, find a stretch of road where you can plot yourself a speed vs MPG chart for your baseline. Bi-directional, averaged, preferably. Then you can return to that stretch to repeat tests in the future. EG: http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...you-15182.html

Testing this kind of thing is problematic because it's not practical to do a proper comparison one after the next under exactly the same conditions.
