I have heard the opposite. You'll need to refurbish the battery at some point during the car's life, but you can do that yourself if you're handy with high voltage. Aside from that, the Insight has been by FAR the lowest maintainence car I've ever owned (n=2).

I think that you would be foolish to get rid of the vw. I also want a fuel efficient, low ppm, super reliable, low maintenance, no cost to repair cheap vehicle. I also want to date super models.

I agree that fixing up the Jetta would be advisable...particularly if you can do it for under 1k, since that's about as low as most cars would be. However, if you are dead set on a new ride, Civics, Corollas, Metros, or Tercels from the 90s are good options, as is the original Insight, of course.

I recently scored a '95 Tercel for under 2k and have hit about 45 mpg on my first tank with a mixture of city and highway and no car mods besides airing my tires. In my case, it's a definite upgrade from the Taurus I used to have that would give me 23 mpg at best in a mixture of city / highway.

I would not discount the Hyundia accent/elantra. I think Hyundia has the reliability of the toyota and honda without the high resell value. You can probably get a 3 year newer Hyundia with 30K less miles on it for the same price as a Civic.
Just another idea.
