new hypermiler/modder - CRX hf

My name is Joe, came from perfomance modding but starting college made me obsessed with saving money. I apply hypermiling to my entire life as well, like if im going to stop at 711 and spend 4 dollars i might as well drive fast too(or do neither). I hypermiled my protege 1.6 manual with basic aero mods, but the short gearing was a real limitation(3300+ rpms at 65). I traded it for a CRX HF, which i am currently driving. First tank was 36 MPG with lots of hesitation and missing. Tune up later and it runs great, waiting on next tank. The tall gearing and exceptional handling make it a lot more fun to hypermile than the protege, not needing the brakes for most turns is a huge bonus. Plan on vtec E swap, full undertray, and smoothing the front end airflow up a bit. Will post pics soon!

Welcome, You have the start of a very high MPG vehicle.
Also I will NOT hold it against you talking bad about a Protege. There are a couple here at this site and we hold our own. You'll have your share of CRX-hf's to compare against.

thank you! mine was a 99 DX. It was an awesome car, but getting it above 40mpg for one tank was like pulling teeth. It was also crashed when i got it, so that prob hurt areo a bit haha. Im sure it would have done better with a taller final drive or 5th gear also. The CRX does indeed rock though, its a lot easier to find info and parts for, and when i read about the 40mpg epa ratings i was pretty surprised. Im actually shopping for a d15z1 right now!

new EPA is 40-47mpg, old EPA is 49-52mpg, so with careful driving you could see 60mpg without alot of work.

yes i forgot to say it but my old "normal" driving habbits usually beat epa numbers, Protege was epa 25/31 and i was getting 32 city/some highway. Expecting <55 out of the crx at first, but i have been riding my bike everywhere before the nice weather is gone. will get some MPG graphs soon haha

Here it is as i got it... ricer wheels and all. at least the exhaust is quiet. Sourcing some tercel wheels + new tires atm (155/80/13 i believe)



alternate means of transport... infinite mpg

I know it's been like a year since you posted, but if you're still working with your crx hf can you take a pic under the hood? I just got a 90 hf and I think maybe the head and intake on it was swapped from something else. Thanks.

my basic overall goal for this car is to do all the aero mods i can to it while still keeping it normal looking/dimensions.

Plexi Short kammback

full undertray (aluminum/chloroplast)

Plexi rear wheel skirts

Plexi front airdam/lip

partial grill block

shaved mirrors/antenna

any other ideas?
