60.2 (imp).

Whaaa ? How did that happen ?

Dunno.

Honest.

I checked it twice and tried to squeeze some more in. But thats what it came to. I kind of wondered as my usual tankful was beeping 'fill me' at about 420 before I started ecodriving and this one was still going at 620 - thats an extra 200 miles.

This was not my 'suspense' plan, that is to come. Just tried a little harder to keep my on-board instant MPG above the average a little more and squeezed harder on the nut between the seat and wheel in other ways in terms of reading the road ahead, lights and traffic.

Also I've only smoked other cars once (that Honda deserved it ) and tried EO(n)C more than usual. I also gaffer (aka Duct) tape fixed my boost pipe issue and added a bottle of diesel cleaner as my usual garage suggested trying it to reduce the smoke, it has cetane enhancer in it too. The smoke is gone now.

So next target is 65 mpg.

As an old bloke I met in Ayr said to me the other week "every day is a schoolday".

Keep safe.

It's the cetane booster what done it. The higher the cetane level the better the mpgs. I'd consider using it more regularly (like every tank full, if it's simply a cetane booster) if it doesn't raise the cost of a tank of fuel too much.

What was the capacity of the cetane booster? Kinda like adding a bit of fuel midtank, but the cetane booster did the job I'm sure.

Arragonis, is that vehicle a stick shift? 60 mpg is pretty good. My old diesel VW Rabbit (Golf 1) would get 48-50 mpg (5sp). I used to run cetane boost through it also. I thought it helped...

Drat, I was hoping it was technique.

The only reason I got it instead of straight injector cleaner was because the booster with cleaner mixed in was on offer at my local Halfords and turned out cheaper by volume. I also just about had the right cash in my pocket vs the cleaner - I'm like Prince Charles in that I rarely carry cash...

I'll have to do the maths and work out if its worth it overall but off the top of my head it looks like it is. The cost for a tankfull treatment was about £3.99 which is less than I pay for a gallon of Diesel at UK prices and the extra distance is about 2 gallons worth estimating 50 mpg. So I would say yes.

Yep it is, specs are 6 speed manual, 1.9 TDi 130hp with lightened flywheel, SMF and uprated sachs clutch. The only other mod is my gaffer tape wrapped boost pipe which was leaking.

Like all moderns though its lardy, so being smaller than a Golf 1 its also heavier. If I can make my mind up whether its a permanent keeper I may start to lighten it - removing seats and so on.

Impressive improvement nonetheless, now see if you can hit 50-60 mpg without the booster!

New tank locked in, we shall see what we can do. No booster in this one but I suspect that some may be hanging around from the previous tank. If I can get this improvement and better with technique and booster maybe 1 tank in 3 or 4 then thats OK with me - its still on offer at Halfords so I'll just get enough to last until Christmas which will be under 20 GBP.

Piwoslaw's 1K tank is impressive and its only slightly larger than mine (60 litres vs 45) so I should be able to do 700 miles.

Maybe.
