Wow, didn't know plates are assigned to the cars in the UK, here it is per person AND car, ownership change, plate change. A person can get a plate transfer, but it costs money. Never heard of anyone stealing the plates yet in the USA, but I'm sure there are people out there.

Looking at these numbers puts it in perspective again :

One in 25 drivers in the UK do not have insurance - one of the worst records in western Europe.

4% uninsured drivers is a heck of a lot !
About double the % we have here in Belgium.

They also happen to be the most reckless & dangerous drivers - the main reason for not having insurance is the excessive cost, which usually comes from having too many accidents, and / or being turned down by insurance companies due to too many claims.

According to recent figures, around 160 people are killed and 23,000 injured by uninsured and untraced drivers every year.
And usually, even when traced they don't have a penny .
Officially anyway.

Then again, surely there are other ways than to abuse fuel stations for the purpose.
The registered vehicles are known.
The insured vehicles are known.
Just make it mandatory to cancel registration before insurance is cancelled or terminated, and send the coppers to anyone owning a non-insured, registered vehicle.

(That means altering the UK's registration system though - what not with the SORN stuff etc. - but it could fairly easily be done without resorting to Stasi practises.)

Driving reckless or careful wouldn't make a difference in what you pay for insurance.

Paying less when you don't have any claims on the insurance is a nice incentive to be a bit more careful.

You can't drive without plates here.

Why keep the same plates when they were stolen ?
That's asking for trouble.
Even more so when they get put on a car of the same make, model and colour.
We need to have 1 original government plate at the rear, so when it's stolen, you'll get a new plate.
We can't run with 2 duplicates.

Again, number plates in the UK are fixed to cars unless you go through the cost and process of buying personalised number plates.

Also, a 1994 1.4 Diesel Citroen AX was never going to be used for high crimes, and nothing ever came of the theft.

It always baffles me why other countries don't have front number plates, it seems an obvious way to further prevent motoring crimes.

In the US some states require front and rear plates, some just require rear plates.

Here there are many people running around with smoke (darkened) license plate covers. I think some are an attempt conceal the plate from red light cameras. In Florida we only have rear plates.

There today, here tomorrow...???
According to the makers of this video, it's here...

Although, instead of No Fuel for you, they're seizing driving licenses for unpaid tickets and back taxes.

Yeah, cameras ain't nothin'. The dirt cheap ubiquity of drones will ensure an easy head shot. Car disablement might be easier, though.
