The Smart Diesel gets about the best mileage you can possibly get, and passes safety tests here.
Same with the Smart 0.6 gasser, though it's not leading the pack anymore.
Far more fuel efficient and safe cars exist than what the US consumer can buy.
Partly because of protectionism.
Partly because the manufacturers don't believe they'll sell in any significant numbers despite the huge US market, as the average US consumer is not interested in FE.
Things will probably change when you're paying around 8 USD a gallon like we are.
