I used to buy Mobil 1 @ Costco, but...

The 'problem' with buying oil at Costco is, you're V limited in your selection!

True, the limited amount of oil they do carry is usually of decent quality, but they don't, for instance, carry Mobil 1 10W-30 'High Mileage' - which is where most ppl want to be these days - especially anyone running a pre-2007 I4 motor [LINK]!

With an I4, it IS possible to have too many additives. What you *need* is a balanced additive package... and that would be Mobil 1 10W-30 High Mileage. These days, the 'garden variety' Mobil 1 has too little additives ('zinc' aka ZDDP [LINK] for example) for engine longevity!

Don't believe me?!?!?

Here you go: Compare the differences in 'zinc' between GF-4 and non-GF-4 oils.

AFAIK, the only Mobil 1 Costco sells is the regular ol' neutered Mobil 1 with the government mandated, GF-4 diminished additive package. To be fair, NOBODY sells EVERY kind of Mobil 1 motor oil - there are just too many different varieties!

I just changed my oil a couple of hours ago - Mobil1 10W-30 (High Mileage) with a Purolator PureONE filter. I bought the oil @ Wal-Mart ($26 - 5 qt/bulk) and the filter @ Pep Boys ($5.99 - PL14459).

That's about as 'cheap' as it gets, and I'm good for 10000 miles, give or take...

Whatever you do... do NOT buy a GF-4 based motor oil!

True!

Engines last forever, since EFI became the norm - but trannies have ALWAYS been the bane of automotive enthusiasts. You can find old motors laying all over the place, however, go try and find an old tranny some time!

In my experience, an autotrans WILL last quite a while if you change the oil and filter every 15000 miles or so - dittos with manual trannys - but most ppl ride 'em til they drop...
