For the mirror I would honestly figure out how to pop it off before you use so much tape on the long road trip. The it'll be simpler and cut down on some front area. You probably can't take off both (check the wiki for the texas laws), but you should be able to safely remove the passenger side.

If you just took the wipers off, you might have the same effect, and if you keep them handy, it's just slipping the wiper back on and tightening the nut.

On the mirror, I'm wondering about all the excess material under the mirror? I would think that you'd want a boattail behind the mirror without all that stuff below it:

That's what I do for the passenger wiper. I cover the exposed bolt in a black rubber thingy to prevent rust. It's been rainy the past few weeks, so I have both wipers on right now. I always keep the driver's wiper on in case there is a legal issue and in the event of something splattering on the windshield at speed.

Just got back from an abreviated run:

47to 52dregrees in the hour i spent 11am to 12noon
tires at 43 psi
a/c is in auto mode at 60 degrees so it's save to assume it never kicked on.
185,640 miles on car
cruise control set at 60mph 7 mile stretch up then down the freeway.
ran 10 gallons of 91 octane w/4 gal in tank of 87 octane
current mods:
blocked top grille and blocked 1 side opening
90% under belly pan.

Tested mods:
seams taped and mirror areo'd and blocked cold air intake in lower grille

sact to roseville 'up' roseville to sact 'down'

with new mods:

up..................busted
down..............33.8mpg
up..................31mpg
down...............32.1mpg

pulled all tape off and put passenger mirror back in place
up..................29.1mpg
down..............29.8

base run was better than my last run 10days ago with the existing mods.
today was sunny and coo. last week was wet and cold
today I ran 91octane last week I ran 87 octane.

I am very pleased with the results. I wanted to get more runs in but I got pressed for time.

I realize that I could MAX the mpg at 55 mph. but I want to test at the general speed of my trip. and since I started my first tests at 60..... Also I don't want to get re-ended while testing!!!! lol

Next up:
svo boy suggested removing the mirror and I am going to look into that....several people looked at my car like I had a HUGE zit on my forhead!!!

Change out the plugs.
wheel covers and maybe rear fender .skirts..

Thank you again for your time and advise!

Merry Christmas.

BTW, octane won't make a difference -- if anything, using higher octane might not burn as completely. Save your money (unless you are getting pinging...).
