I haven't noticed many gas stations closing in my hometown, but some are reducing their operation time for security reasons.

There's a big Wisconsin-based chain called Kwik Trip that's been spreading like wildfire in these parts. For as much as everyone likes to play the "woe is the independent store owner," going into a Kwik Trip makes you realize just how lousy the other gas stations around here are. Their coffee is actually hot (I can't tell you how many times I've gotten coffee from a station just to find out it's cold), their food is edible, and their groceries are younger than me.
If "the little guy" can't be bothered to do even simple things like making a fresh pot of coffee once in a while, then screw him. I have better things to do than worry about the livelihood of someone who refuses to put effort into his/her business.

These new electric vehicles that keep coming out could have used a gas station every 10 miles or less, not to mention that gas station in the middle of no where might have come in handy if they were to all install chargers.

So it's not EcoModder's fault? We've been trying so hard...

Nowadays many gas stations became some sort of open-mall.

There's a station a few doors away from me that closed last year. About time, too. They never sold gas and hardly sold anything else, it was more a place for the local bangers, hoodlums and dealers to meet, greet and trade.
More often than not, I would hear gunfire there. Seriously. Hardly a day went by. Since that place went toes up and the ne'er-do-wells across the street got hauled off to the hoosegow, things have gotten pretty quiet. It's almost nice around there now.

Lots of ARCO stations around Tacoma shut down during the recession and have been eyesores ever since. I see that it must've been a casualty of the sale of Arco from BP to Tesoro, in which they did not renew the leases of many franchised stations.
Update: SoCal Arco gas stations to close - The Orange County Register

Less people working means less gas being used to get to work.
All of the local Hess stations have been sold to Speedway.
