Noticed a bunch of those hubs in Berlin in use, but most had the shifters removed or disabled.

I actually have a S-A 3-speed non-coaster brake hub in my parts pile (of course that'd require adding rim brakes). I briefly considered a conversion, but to be honest, I ride this bike so little, it's not really worth the effort to re-gear it.

So, I'll just continue to complain about it once a year when I get it out of storage.

Also, I can't justify spending money on a free bike.

Condolences! And I hear you; I add a rear rack + basket to almost every bike I get. Great for grocery store runs.

I'm just about to pick up a couple more old-school style rear racks from another hoarder, um, collector.
