Pivoting roof: fastback converts to hatchback when using the rear seats?

What about a pivoting or sliding roof where it is a fastback when seating only 2 people (in the front seats) then you may rise the rear roof section when you need to seat people in the rear seat?

Kind of a CRX when seating 2



Turning to a Civic when seating 4 or 5


Also kind of Jeep Wrangler fastback tops


Turning into normal square tops


Did you get the idea?

4 door sedans would be tricky to design while still looking good.
As to avoid ugly designs like the Porsche Panamera


Its cheap copy the Honda Accord Crosstour


And even the BMW X6


Probably despite the aerodynamically inclined roof when seating 2, saloons or coupes will still need a separate trunk/boot section?
Suggestions?

active aerodynamic roof

Back in the 1990s there was a show produced for TV entitled "FUTURE CARS" in which a Mitsubishi concept was shown,with a 'transforming' roof which could alter its shape even while driving.

We have a third-row option for the CR-V here.

Well, 2nd-and-a-half... third row occupants basically need to be legless or very, very, very, very, very short.

One time, a five year-old rode in the back seat of my 1987 Honda Prelude.

He mentioned that he did not have anywhere to put his feet.

Over 90% of the time cars are driven with 2 or only 1 people inside.
Yet most people buy 4 or 5 seaters just for those family days.

It's the image that they want.
If they appear to be an active, adventurous person, then they stand a better chance of scoring with the opposite sex and impressing their friends.

So back to the original topic, how would the side windows work on the rear of the car ? I suppose they could be made to slide downward into a slot in the body.
Nah ! Actually, they would just have to be rolled down to the height when the roof now meets their top. The shape of the window would leave a gap between the roof and the window. I guess a flexible membrane could be used here.

Nissan Pulsar gen 2, with a swappable notch/Kamm/commando roofline.

About the time you posted this I was contemplating a stake-bed truck with curved top bows for the roof that would rotate forward and down, with wide slots in the tarpauline. When you need the space the tarp would be curved up; otherwise it would be sway-backed between the flat sides.

Same kind of deal.

Yet I have no problems carrying two mid-sized dogs (55 & 65 lbs) in my Insight. And my late big dog - 125+ lbs of Akita - loved to ride in the back of my CRX.
