I've not had a chance to pull out the glowplugs yet-its never funbon these old derv lumps. I wonder if my brother still has some spare..

the fact that the clock resets is making me think that the battery voltage is dipping too low-and that i may need a new one.

i'll be looking at the grill block as well-off work for the next couple of days so can get dome stuff done

Injector pump case pressure? Do these older pumps have case pressure valves? Maybe the case pressure is fluctuating and causing the timing to jump around?

How many RPM is this fluctuation?

Vacuum leak somewhere...

My VW TDI is only an 03, but with 200k miles on it...every vacuum line on the car had to be replaced...all rotted.

Reminds me of my Mom's VW Beetle 1.8t. At something like 25k miles, it had a rotted and mostly missing vacuum line.

The leak off pipes certainly look ropey,as do the ones up to the control valves on the bulkhead.

I'm not sure re the pump having a pressure valve-its cable throttle and mechanical fuel pump so very basic.

The rpm doent really fluctuate-just the cars responsiveness to fixed levels of throttle input varies-you can feel it surge along the road then drop off

Vacuum lines/leak off pipes and fuel filters sewm prime suspects-may get one or two of each ordered

Initial investigations suggest I can do a full service inc fuel filter for circa £34. I think that may be a starting point

Well, mainly good news today!

After a couple of tries to get the car running properly, a fuel filter change seems to have sorted out the pulsing issue.

First tank (the 75mph drive home then running about town) came in at 39.2L for 410 miles- not too bad with the excessive speed and running issues.

This may have contributed:

That's great news...cheap fix.

I have two VW's...a new gas one that isn't rusty, and an older diesel one that IS rusty...lol. However, they both work well...so far.

Oh, and I had to give a co-worker a boost at work yesterday...his 2013 Subaru wouldn't start...lol.

I hope to have my diesel finally on the road in January...I'm running out of things to fix, and it's running like a champ. I'll ditch the non rusty gas VW that barely ever gets 40mpg, for the diesel that should get 60mpg with ease...I hope.

Keep us posted on the Polo. Great stuff.

Check this out..

think 60mph plus new fuel filter and tyres to 44psi seems to have made it happy

200 miles into this tank

Check you have a good thermostat, I've yet to see a VW of this age with a good thermostat. If its not making temps or slow to get to temp this will make a huge difference to mpg's.
