Not really, most cars when they start to knock retard timing.

Turbo and performance cars have high ignition advance and so need high octane fuel.

High octane fuel in a regular car is pointless, its based on something called a driveability index. High octane fuel in a regular car might allow the engine to self-advance its timing a little but no stock ECU will advance the timing very far. Any difference is likely down to premium gas often having no ethanol in it.

There are others factors in play that arent being considered. The lower octane fuels have slightly more btu per gallon than the higher octane fuels, but then when you factor in the variable introduced by the ethanol content which has just about half the btu per gallon of gasoline the consumer doesn't really have enough information to make an informed choice at the pump.

Sorry, that's pretty much booo-gus.
Often, but not always though.

We do have premium diesel here that actually lowers fuel consumption - by around 2 to 3 %.

Too bad they're also asking premium prices for it and no discounts, so in the end you lose more money on the premium stuff.
