Wait a second, wait a second. Bing! Porsche 944!
Take out the gas motor, put in a 1.9 TDi! Injectors, turbo and software upgrade to 250hp and silly torque. 50 mpg and sexy!
You want it! You know you want it!

I like it, except for the difference between a Porsche and a porcupine .

There is none!
Getting rid of the motor is the best thing that can happen to a watercooled, front engined Porsche. The rest of the car is not that bad.
If I could get a VAG 5 cylinder TDI for easy money, it'll sound sexy, too!
Where's my passport?

The requirements:
-manual transmission
-back seats + adequate room (I consider my 95 adequately roomy as a reference.)
-relatively easy to work on
But most importantly the car still needs personality, that's just something I can't give up. I need a car that can still make me laugh, otherwise I don't see the point of driving.
Some cars I've considered as candidates:
- Mk I Golf/Rabbit
- First Generation Saab 900
- BMW E30
- Mk IV Golf/ A4 Jetta TDI (perhaps the fact that I've driven them in the past gives them personality)
- I am fond of the Civic Hatch's as well.
Any other ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I simply get a pit in my stomach driving my Formula; I used to love hearing the exhaust, but now it doesn't do anything for me.

AE86 Corolla?
You like hatches, it's RWD, looks cool lowered, TONS of aftermarket support since you probably enjoy customizing, and is rated at 26/33mpg with a manual:
Fuel Economy of the 1987 Toyota Corolla
The 4AC is a little anemic, but it can still be a fun car. And it's efficient enough to maybe hit your 40mpg goal.

The Merkur isn't going to get 40 mpg.
If you're going to swap a TDI into a Porsche 944, why not get a 928 with a blown motor?
The difference between a Porsche and a Porcupine is the Porcupine has its pricks on the outside!

That's a thought, but the 944 is lighter and a little more common.
And as I said............seeeexxxxy!
