Airflow past an automobile (modeled after a Saturn SL2) at 55 miles per hour is simulated. The model is quite detailed and includes the wheels, recessed headlights, and a spoiler. This tetrahedral mesh contains 447,180 nodes and 2,801,488 elements. At each time step, a system of equations with 1,638,389 unknowns is solved using matrix-free iterations

Case Studies

When Mark Gerisch decided to make the Romulus Predator a true supercar--an exciting, aerodynamically sleek vehicle with a top speed in excess of 200 mph--he knew he needed to update the traditional methods he had been using to build replicas of classic cars.

The Predator started as a collaboration between Gerisch and Ron Sims, a GM stylist, that resulted in a clay model of the Predator body. Wind tunnel testing showed the design to be aerodynamically viable, so the work of refining the shape of the car began (see Fig. 6.38). Instead of building multiple physical models to visualize changes, the clay model was digitized and transformed into a surface model using ICEM Surf.

The aerodynamic coefficient of the vehicle is simply the lowest in the world, less than 0.1! It has been proved at the wind tunnel of CSTB, in Nantes.
