Many years ago a friend wanted to go to Bonneville and designed a car strictly for aerodynamics. It did not have a rear window so we got our heads together and came up with a periscope type device that actually worked very well...in theory. With outside-side mirrors and that periscope type mirror inside, one might be able to build a nice safe aero-body driver.

The later version doesn't have the drag of the tubular stalk, but the free-standing mirror probably has a better view.

On the car in question, the body tapered down from the drivers area roof towards the rear. The mirror was basically a regular rearview mirror in looks inside, but was tilted to make the view go up to a second mirror facing to the rear outside. Rearward viewing was totally open without obstruction.

The Arcimoto FUV, for example, has enough side taper that the 'door' mirrors both have visibility straight to the rear.
