Are you pro- or anti-start-stop?
I just found out that cars with this technology have a second, significantly more expensive battery to run everything while the engine is stopped.
Trust me, I love saving gas\money, and I always want to pollute less, but now I am wondering about the math.

I'm anti-ICE only, and pro hybrid start/stop.
It seems to me all cars should be hybrids by now considering electric motors can provide the brief periods where lots of power is needed and also recover braking energy. Electric is also best when hardly any power is needed, allowing the engine to stay off.
I don't think I'd buy another ICE vehicle, and at this point probably at least plug-in.
Does that make me pro start/stop?

Maybe high end cars with start-stop or hybrids, but my Peugeot 308 has start-stop and only 1 battery. In fact, many high end ICE-only cars had 2 batteries in the last 2 decades.
Granted, in my Pug the feature doesn't want to work with any battery, only with special AGM Start-Stop technology, and such a battery is twice as expensive 
BTW, there is something wrong with the poll - I could only tick 1 answer, though 2 are relevant (#1 & #3).

Our start-stop car gets excessive gasoline in its oil.

2019 Tiguan and no second battery here. It works if you drive it right. DW will let off the pedal early and thus waste the usefulness. Maybe it is a subconscious protest to something new

I don't know guys. When my friend mentioned the second battery I did a search and found tons of results about how expensive the second battery is. I just tried to see how common that second battery was and just got Google trying to correct me.
[snotty voice] It's not a second battery, it is a secondary battery!
...and tons of results about expensive second\ary batteries.

Start-stop makes to most sense (to me) to have it part of a hybrid drive train. The whole time I'm slowing down, stopping and creeping foward, my engine is off. I can be stopped for minutes, and my engine is off. When coming into town from the higher elevation side, I can go through practically the whole town with my engine off, basically coasting the whole time, not using any fuel nor electricity to move my vehicle.
Granted, I could shut off my engine manually in a stick shift car and coast in neutral. But if I need to suddenly accelerate or stop (no vacuum brakes) things can get sketchy in a car not designed for it.
But finding batteries can be a pain. In my Avalon the 12V battery is 9 years old and failing. And I went to several autoparts stores and nobody carries a 12 battery for my car. I was told they had to send in an inquiry and they would get back to me with a price and potential time frame... I'm tempted to order one through Toyota and travel the (at least) 120 miles there (and then 120 back) to go pick it up.
Then there's the hybrid battery. My 2006 Prius kind of needs a new one. And no I'm not getting a refurbirshed or aftermarket one, unless I decide to get it running in order to sell it. So it's $2,000 for an OEM hybrid traction battery or bust for me.
One benefit I don't see anyone else has mentioned is the blissful silience when you stop. Windows open, you can hear the birds singing, the soft breeze blowing through the trees, kids playing. This may be worth it to me even if I have to deal with expensive batteries that are hard to find.

you're right, you don't know. 
The VW does not have a secondary battery. Just the one, and the engine may not shut down due to loads.
