Found a 3.45 rear end nearby for relatively cheap, which would work out to a 7.5% higher gearing. It doesn't give me the tire size options of a 3.08 or 3.27 but should offer some improvement. I think it will take a couple aero mods to get the most out of the gearing change, possibly aerocap or partial front bally pan.

Any estimates of what I could expect for efficiency improvement at highway speeds?

I am curious to see what kind of FE increase the 3:45 gives you. I have been looking at this swap for quite some time. With mine being an older Ranger I don't have the advantage of re-flashing the computer for the speedometer changes. I want to do a 3:45 and keep the stock tire size or possibly a 3:27 and smaller tires but switching to an 8.8" rear will add some difficulty. Please keep posting your results.
