Renault still sells cars in the US?

Do they? Reason why I ask is that when I was coming back down from the bay this morning on highway 5 I saw what looked like a 1999 Renault Clio Sport. The car was plated, and had current tags. Looked almost exactly like this

In renault.com's FAQ page, United States isn't present, but south America (Mexico...) is. May be could you get one from Renault export service (called "corps diplomatique").

OT : newer little cars from Renault now have their front grille partly blocked. Gasoline is more blocked than diesel as turbo's radiator is not blocked.
The same for Citroen's newer little cars, except C1 has blocked upper grill while C2 has partly blocked lower grill.

Denis.

I agree with groar (sorry about the mis-spell, it was late at night), it definitely could have been from Mexico. Do you remember the license plate? Did it look like a USA plate or ?????

Last year I thought I spotted the new Saturn Astra going to LAX, but another saturnfan pointed out that the car was the *previous* gen Opel, sold as a Chevy in Mexico :

On the trunk, you can *barely* see the Chevy chevron in the center of an "Opel" circle.

1987 was the last year for new Renaults in the USA. The same year they dissolved connections with American Motors, whose assets (mainly the Jeep brand) were sold to Chrysler.

Doing a little digging, Mexico is my guess to. Don't recall the number but it was a California plate with 09 tags. I was curious so I tailed it a bit.

It clearly said Renault on the hatch lid....

groar, couldn't say about the grille, the whole car was a deep navy blue/black but its possible.

There is probably different regs with cars than with trucks, but I could have sworn we can't register a Mexico car here in CA. Smog being the main reason. But if we can, the boarder is only 3 hrs away, could be shopping time soon

Heh i'd be interested to see how well french cars sell in america.
See clios all the time in england, the older ones, like that '99 are popular cars for first time drivers, mainly since french cars are very cheap second-hand compared to german/jap cars, and lower group insurance, my car was worth less than my first insurance payment, car £700, 10 months insurance = £763.

There are 3 Clio's in the car park outside now, a model like the one you saw, a newer 2003 one and my mum's new shape '05.
