When in a panic, one tends to use what is at hand and available. The coal plants are still useable, then have access to relatively cheap coal from many allied sources. Pick one: population revolt from lack of GOD given cheap power, or the next generations suffer since I got mine.

Diablo canyon and many other nuke plants are being relicensed.

So-called "net zero" may eventually be achievable, but not nearly as fast. The very same ecoterrorists pushing for it are the ones who try to pull the plug on any logical approach to decrease the carbon footprint in an affordable way.

Renewable energy in the UK.

It kinda works when we more or less have world peace and everyone is getting along, no unusual weather events, ect.

Achieving such predictability to enable a greater reliance on a single "clean" energy source is the hardest aspect. So, that's why I would only believe net-zero to be achievable with a wide array of options. Just like we don't see all motor vehicles running on a single fuel, it's impossible to neglect some energy resources such as biomass-based motor fuels which may still be pointed out as "dirt" by the ecoterrorists.

Renewables are a part of the future, but not the future.

Interesting formulation. Future as a singular thing. Or an actual thing.

I mean, I've been saying that our energy will remain eclectic for some time now. Those saying they have THE answer regardless of local needs and circumstances are just low resolution thinkers.

I know, I was responding to op4 in agreement, and to you to some extent.
