I did that trip (around Lake Superior) back in the 90s on my Ninja 750. Not exactly a sport tourer, but I could deal with it at that age (probably not now though).

We left Chicago on a day when it was 104 degrees (left before the temps got near that) and later that day or the next we were on the north coast of Lake Superior with sweatshirts under full leathers - and still cold. Rode another 20 miles, heading away from the lake, and had to stop to take it off because the temps had risen 20-30 degrees.

Fun trip, but I recall the roads weren't that great at the time. Hopefully they've improved.

IIRC, my 750 was getting between 45-50 MPG at a steady hwy cruise, which wasn't too bad loaded with saddle bags, tank bag, and tail bag.

If the bike fits, ride it. My late father-in-law rode his restored 1955 BMW 250cc from Buffalo, NY to Redmond, OR in 2010.

Great read. Thanks for the heads-up, sendler.

I've driven (car) that route (TransCanada north shore) several times. It's quite lovely.

Oh, and I got a kick out of the fuel economy report where he ran out of gas and coasted into the gas station:

Quote:
From a 13L tank - a full 2.35L remaining seemed like a lot to me. I had travelled about 300kms - yielding a fuel economy figure of 80 mpg (Imperial) or about 67 mpg U.S.
